RESEARCH IN AFRICOLOGY / Volume 3
2015 Remastered Version
"21.12.2012 (Truth or Lies?)" is a striking summation and reflection of Franck Biyong's singular gifts and versatile musicianship. Constructed out of his usual collage of studio and live elements, this album shows a more relaxed side to another wise intense and complex production, promoting not just melodies but stretched out solos and music for music's sake.
The record reflects the rapidly changing and tormented modern times and pinballs between classy Afro jams, psychedelic ambient sounds, avant jazz, prowling beats and blissful weeping guitar solos. Here Biyong exploits the timbral possibilities of the various woodwind instruments, pattering percussion and peals of keyboards.
There is definitely more space on this album than ever before on Franck's previous recordings, a sparse but heavy mood that isn't just Afro Jazz or experimental music influenced either: The ever changing and fertile arrangement ideas once again prove that Biyong's unusual musical imagination in highly attuned.
